Elizabeth Shapland MBE, beloved of all her family, died peacefully on the 16th of December, aged 82.
In honour of Elizabeth’s distinguished work as a bereavement counsellor in the prison chaplaincy service, we welcome donations to the Prison Advice and Care Trust (PACT) or to the NSPCC of which Elizabeth was a lifelong supporter.
Elizabeth readily worked with bereaved prisoners across all walks of life from those in for the first time to those who for various reasons would return to custody sometimes very frequently – and of all ages from age 18 to even plus 80. Elizabeth would readily treat each one with respect and dignity no matter how serious the offence had been, be it drug trafficking to the taking of a life. She would readily see how each person coming her way was carrying a heavy, sometimes unbearable, loss: the loss of a special sole-trusting grandparent to the tragedy of a partner, family member or another’s untimely death including as victim. Whilst Elizabeth could not arrange for prisoners to have early release from prison, she certainly enabled many to be released from the imprisonment of bereavement and all its complexities. Enter your master’s rest, Elizabeth, where the Lord will bless you and keep you safe in his presence into eternity.
